About 2 years ago we started keeping our first chickens. We didn’t have a large backyard, but 2 chickens would fit in.

We want to learn more about keeping chickens, so the best thing to do is watch a lot of Youtube videos and actually have chickens! We built the chicken coop ourselves, we had some wood, a leftover door and some materials. And we were quite proud of the end result.

In our village in the Netherlands we were lucky that someone sold chickens. These chicks were around 16 weeks. Since we already had plans at that time to go to France and we loved the series Allo Allo, they got names from the series. So we called the black one: Yvette and the light brown Mimi.

We let them get used to their coop and outdoor run. After a few days we gave them the space of the garden and they went on a journey of discovery. They love to dust baths to get rid of mites and other small creatures.

They grew well and after a few weeks we got our first egg from mimi.

I also had a vegetable garden in the backyard, not much, but it turned out that it is not a good combination with chickens. So we decided to give the chickens the space and I (Kim) continued in a community vegetable garden.

In between, an old chicken (from friends) was added and she spend her overdue time with the other two. Our 2 chickens have now been housed with friends so we can prepare our move to France. We hope eventually that they can move over to France as well, but time will tell. Maybe they like it a lot with our friends. We will see!
